Catch live music alfresco all around Vancouver and the Lower Mainland through September
Sure it’s the end of August and our minutes of daylight have been ticking away since June 21, but take one look at the outdoor concerts still to come across the Lower Mainland and you just might shriek with newfound glee. Apparently concert organizers in this city have agreed to make the most of an Indian summer and line up the outdoor shows right past the September equinox and into fall.
Vancouver outdoor music venues and upcoming shows
Music lovers know that some of the best concert venues in this city are shared with mosquitoes, bats, sound curfews and sometimes even Mother Nature’s giant tear drops, but these beautiful wide open spaces are also place to stretch out on a blanket, escape the city and dance to the rhythms and under the fiery glow of a late summer setting sun.

Granville gets the dirt on six Vancouver DJs as they take us to their favourite locales around town
Whoever said video killed the radio star? Well, it was a band called The Buggles.
Who? Exactly. Radio is far from dead. In fact, radio is so much alive that it’s becoming increasingly popular, thanks to better-than-ever contest giveaways, social media interactions, broke-a$$ iPods (kidding!) and, most of all, the awesome DJs that make sure you’re listening to great tunes while sharing the latest news, gossip and laughs.

The frenzied energy of Vancouver's Japandroids adds vibrancy to the local music scene
The Vancouver music scene is shifting; fast departing are the apathetic indie rock fans who could barely muster a head nod, and a young, vibrant and energetic crowd is taking their place.

Biltmore Cabaret is unapologetically unique from the swath of mainstream Vancouver nightlife venues
If you’re craving a fun night out but want to escape the bar-star bustle of the Granville Strip, head to the Biltmore Cabaret.
Along with creepy stuffed animal heads, this vintage off-Main Street venue hosts an array of local and touring musicians, top notch DJs, stand-up comedy acts and bring-on-the-Jagerbomb house parties, including retro hip-hop nights. The best nights to attend are Thursday and Friday nights, which feature up-and-coming touring bands for cheap.
The crowd is unpretentious yet trendy, reflecting a place that’s on the cusp of going mainstream yet still under-the-radar enough to be considered cool. The room, which recently underwent extensive renovations, is red, retro and oozes some serious mood.

What better way to learn the secrets of Vancouver’s underground music scene than on the big screen
In 2008, I had the chance to see
City Beats: Lost Vancouver from the '40s to the '60s at the
Vancouver DOXA Documentary Film Festival. The program featured a series of archived black-and-white short films that offered "poetic portraits" of our city. The audience was blown away by trolley buses along Hastings, fishing in False Creek and canoes on Lost Lagoon.
