Home decor enthusiasts already know about interior designer Ami McKay’s good deeds, thanks to her Makeover Wish television series, so it’s no surprise that her compassion extends to the planet, too, as seen in Pure, McKay’s furniture design company.

“I wanted to feel like I was making a positive impact on this world, and this furniture is really good for our families and our health, and it’s good for the planet,” she says. Pure features four collections: Earth, Water, Air and Fire, which McKay describes as “sexy and unpredictable.” But there’s nothing capricious about Pure’s material makeup: hardwood frames are crafted from FSC-certified B.C. alder, poplar and hickory, with VOC-free finishes; fabrics are OEKO-tex certified with organic dyes; and batting and cushioning are made from organic cotton and biodegradable natural latex rubber. Even the staples used are recycled aluminum.

Furniture pieces can be given the individual touch with embellishments, such as McKay’s inspired-by-nature embroidery patterns. Decorate a sofa or settee with a cheery bird perched in a tree, sprawling coral branches, or tulips wavering in the wind.
