The Midwifery Group on Vancouver's Main Street provides comfort and care for new and expecting parents
Walking south along Main St from King Edward, one can’t help but stop and look at the photos of babies and pregnant bellies that grace the window of one small office. If you step inside, an oasis of tranquility greets you. Warm colours and comfortable couches invite you to sit down. But this is no coffee shop or regular office, this is The Midwifery Group. This is the location of the first midwife clinic in Vancouver.
Opened since 1998, the Midwifery Group has delivered more than 2,000 babies; some at the local hospitals, some at home. The eight midwives, who are all registered with the College of Midwives of British Columbia, work in teams to provide the best care possible for their clients.
In addition to regular pre-natal visits, they also offer post-partum care for six weeks following a birth and a lending library of videos and books.
So next time you’re walking by, stop and think about the miracle of life and how this group is helping future parents throughout Vancouver.

While other countries are banning or limiting the use of food colours, Canada still lacks the adequate labelling requirements to even tell us which colours are used in our foods
Maia’s lips were deep blue when I picked her up after a play date. "Are you cold?" I asked. She wasn’t cold, her lips had been dyed by a lollipop.
"Blue raspberry flavour," she told me. "The berries aren’t worth finding to pick this summer though, they don’t taste very good."

How to resist the frozen foods aisle—even when you're tired and hungry
Monday was one of those days. We had just been away for the long weekend and we had a rental car, so we finished the weekend by running all those errands that are awkward to do by transit or on foot. Then, because we had a car, we decided to go to a big-box grocery store and stock up on heavy stuff.

How to make sustainable choices for your little ones without breaking the bank?
As a new mama, it’s important we raise our child using natural products whenever possible. However, I was disheartened to discover that there seemed to be a (high) price in doing so.

Does that hour really help, or is it just a hollow gesture to assuage our guilt?
Maia took the lead: She went from room to room, checking for lights that were on and electronics that were plugged in or running. Our tally was pretty good: only one light, the stereo and one computer needed to be shut off. Then we were in darkness. I already had the candles out and we made a quiet ceremony of lighting them. We each spoke of a wish we had for the Earth. Maia wants it to be healthy.

Can we be cool parents and help our children make healthy food choices?
Maia is fit and healthy. But still I cringe at how many sweets she encounters on any given day.
